CranioSacral Therapy
by Elena Fursova, RMT
CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle hands-on approach to wellness which increases body awareness and the mind/body connection. The CranioSacral system is like the body’s main electrical conduit so it is important to keep a clear path for this flow to be unrestricted.
CranioSacral Therapy is a light touch manual therapy that seeks to locate and release restrictions in the CranioSacral system and throughout the body. This system is composed of the membranes and CranioSacral fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. According to the Upledger Institute, CST uses a touch of under 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, to “release restrictions in the CranioSacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.”
This light touch is said to affect the pressure and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid, which is the fluid around the brain and spinal cord. This process is thought to relieve pain and dysfunction. Practitioners claim that CST can be carried out as a standalone treatment or used in conjunction with medical or other alternative therapies. This is an effective form of treatment for a wide range of problems because the CranioSacral system influences so many other systems in the body. It is suitable for people of all ages including babies, children and the elderly, and can be effective in acute or chronic cases
CST complements the body's natural healing processes, and is increasingly administered as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease. It has proven to be effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
CranioSacral Therapy is an excellent form of therapy for many conditions on the physical level such as headaches, TMJ dysfunction, back pain and trauma that is stored in the tissues. On the emotional level CST helps to support healing from emotional trauma, old wounds, and current stressors. Some clients even have profound spiritual experiences, whereby the outcomes of this type of modality are very unique to the individual, based on their needs and intentions at that time.
Elena Fursova is the only Registered Massage Therapist at the Active Life Centre who presently includes CranioSacral Therapy into their practice. She has completed her training in CranioSacral Level 1.
