Sport Massage Therapy

by Kip Petch, RMT, CSMTA Sport Fellow

The Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association (CSMTA), the leading authority in Sport Massage in Canada defines this powerful modality as the “application of specific massage techniques to an athlete with the purpose of enhancing the athlete’s preparation for, or recovery from, the physical demands and complex parameters of training or competition".

Our Registered Massage Therapists have a keen interest in working with athletes and our own Kip Petch is the only CSMTA designated Sport Fellow (formerly Certified Sport Massage Therapist) in the Edmonton area. He has recently completed writing the textbook entitled “Sport Massage-Theory and Techniques for the Massage Therapist” which will become the authoritative book on this modality throughout Canada and beyond and is primed to become the required Sport Massage textbook in Massage Schools. Kip has developed and instructed numerous Sport Massage related courses across the country for over 30 years.

Sport Massage Therapy utilizes specific massage techniques, administered within certain time parameters, to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The positive effects of Sport Massage Therapy can be attained through a variety of specialized techniques which stimulates or relaxes the athlete, thereby promoting positive physical, psychological and performance outcomes.

Prevention of injury is another important objective of Sport Massage Therapy, however, if and when injuries do occur, this focused Massage Therapy approach can be highly effective throughout rehabilitation.

It must be kept in mind that not all athletes are created equally and that athletes are as varied as any other group of individuals and it is crucial for the Massage Therapist to administer their treatments accordingly. Athletes can have a variety of expectations about their treatments. Consequently, a therapist must be prepared to draw from a mixture of techniques and options to achieve the desired result and to satisfy the athlete’s requirements.

Determining the correct depth of pressure and speed that a therapist employs throughout the session is a critical factor in Sport Massage Therapy that comes from extensive practice and an assortment of different experiences. Therapists must utilize their acquired knowledge and experience of working with highly motivated athletes in their own particular environments, to help them to achieve their performance goals.

Sport Massage is highly beneficial for individuals at any level of athletic performance… from novice to elite!

How can Sport Massage Assist You?

* Maximizes Performance: Athletes who strive for excellence benefit greatly from massage therapy which allows them to train more consistently, push themselves to higher levels of performance, ache less and recover more quickly.

* Reduces Strain and Discomfort of Training: Increases circulation and speeds up the removal of metabolic waste to relieve muscle pain, spasm, stiffness and fatigue.

* Accelerates Recovery after Training: Assists the athlete to train harder (Quality) and do more work at each session (Quantity) and the athlete will require less rest between workouts (Efficiency).

* Prevents Injuries: Relieves the stress in the muscles and tendons before the problems compound themselves and lead to injury.

* Treats Injuries: Speeds the healing process, increases range of motion and encourages the muscles to heal properly and function at maximum efficiency.

* Lengthens Your Athletic Career: Maximizes enjoyment of physical activities while experiencing fewer injuries and attaining a higher level of performance.
