CSMTA Sport Fellows, Kip Petch BPE, RMT, CSMTA(SF) and Aurel Hamran Dip. SIM, RMT, CSMTA(SF), are proud to announce the release of their book entitled:
Sport Massage-Theory and Techniques for the Massage Therapist
There is a growing interest in Sport Massage among Massage Therapists in Canada and internationally. Consequently, this book was developed as a resource for personal knowledge and professional development in Sport Massage. It provides recommended concepts for Massage Therapists who work with, or would like to work with, athletes from the grass-roots to the elite level as well as for the physically active general population.
The content presented in this book is different from other Sport Massage books on the market. It contains a collection of theoretical and practical information, along with techniques and protocols, which have demonstrated effectiveness for preventing injuries, enhancing athletic performance and improving recovery. The objective is to present information on this subject which is concise, understandable and most importantly, highly practical. There is also an option for the reader to utilize this as a Distance Education Course which involves self-study and the successful completion of a written exam. Please consult the Canadian Sport Massage Therapist Association (CSMTA) website at www.csmta.ca for more information.
Given the vast scope of this project from the many respected resources and contributors, this book is the quintessential and comprehensive resource on Sport Massage. The contributors to this course have drawn upon many years of firsthand experience while establishing trust with the athletes with whom they have worked in a wide variety of sport environments. It has been an ambitious but essential undertaking, which is vital to the advancement of Sport Massage in Canada, and beyond.
This book is comprised of 476 pages and there are a total of 315 photographs in the book (300 colour photos).
Topics include:
Chapter 1: Concepts of Sport Massage
Chapter 2: History of Sport Massage
Chapter 3: Scientific Principles
Chapter 4: Training, Recovery and Injury Prevention
Chapter 5: Duties of the Sport Massage Therapist
Chapter 6: Warm-up, Training and Maintenance Massage
Chapter 7: Event Sport Massage
Chapter 8: Sport Massage Techniques
Chapter 9 & 10: Sport Massage Perspectives (featuring a cross section of 12 different Sports written by Massage Therapists who have worked with elite, Olympic level athletes and/or teams, and reveal their unique experiences within that sport.)
CSMTA Education Program
“Sport Massage-Theory and Techniques for the Massage Therapist” is the fourth course of the CSMTA Education Program. Along with the other three courses, “Sport Physiology-Concepts and Applications for the Massage Therapist”, “Sport Psychology-Foundations and Practice for the Massage Therapist” and “Sport Injuries-Assessment and Treatment Protocol for the Massage Therapist”, they provide post-graduate training for Massage Therapists interested in working with athletes.
CSMTA Advanced Sport Massage Course
The CSMTA offers a 2-day course on Sport Massage at various dates and locations across Canada. Kip Petch was the original developer off this course and is one of the qualified Sport Fellows who teach this course. It is a highly practical course of which the content is heavily based upon the information contained in the Sport Massage textbook.
Everyone involved in higher education knows that learning is a lifetime pursuit. These five courses were developed for the enlightened Massage Therapist. They may already have completed a Massage Therapy program and they might have received some training in Sport Massage, but are eager to learn more about the subject. Therefore, these books and associated courses are designed to build on the pre-existing knowledge of Massage Therapists, while providing additional theoretical and practical information.
These educational opportunities should prove beneficial to experienced Massage Therapists, and to those new to the profession, and would be beneficial for other Allied Health professionals such as Physiotherapists, Athletic Therapists, Chiropractors, Physicians, etc., while assisting athletes in a variety of sport-specific settings.
Enjoy your journey!
Kip and Aurel

It would therefore be the author’s recommendation to select a colour version, and the hard cover version is a much more durable and professional looking product.
